Work-related ill health is costly, to the individuals and their families, the business and the economy as a whole. Key HSE figures for Great Britain 2018/19 show 28.2 million working days lost due to work-related illness and workplace injury.  

New sentencing guidelines have led to increased fines for larger organisations.  In 2018/19, the total fines for health and safety offences prosecuted by HSE was £54.5 million.  The cost can be significant if an incident occurs, but good health and safety processes, procedures and a strong safety culture led by management can mitigate the risk.
